How to prep - Maternity Sessions

You’ve booked your session, now what?

Your mind may be flooded with a million different worries regarding your session, but with this simple guide, you will be photo ready in no time.

  1. Hire a hair stylist and makeup artist

Of course, we want your session to be as smooth sailing as possible. I would recommend booking a hair/ makeup appointment for the morning of your session date to ensure a photo ready look, and of course, a day of pampering! A natural glam makeup look, along with voluminous curls are my go-to!

  2. Get a spray tan (If you want some color, of course!)

Porcelain skin is absolutely beautiful and I love showcasing it, however, most moms get an added layer of confidence with a slight layer of color. Most of the time, we have uneven skin tones that can photograph a bit splotchy. In order for the best results, I would recommend a spray tan to even your skin tone and give you a beautiful, golden glow. Be sure to get a color/tone that will work best for you. Booking with a spray tan artist is definitely my preference, rather than booking for a booth tan or self tanning at home.

  3. Select your wardrobe

There’s no need to stress about what you will wear. When you book a session with me, you will have access to my exclusive client closet. I have an array of gowns, bodysuits, and fabrics that will make you feel like an absolute queen on your session day! It is important to pre-select your wardrobe to keep everything moving as it should at your session!

  4. Choose accessories

Once you have chosen your wardrobe, it’s time to set aside the proper accessories that will accentuate whichever wardrobe options you chose. I recommend starting with earrings and then adding in stunning necklaces, bracelets, headpieces, and heels (If you don’t want to go barefoot). I will have a few accessory options available at the studio, as well.

  5. Purchase Undergarments

Based on which outfits you select, you will need a few different undergarments. I would recommend purchasing a nude, strapless bra, along with nude underwear. If you are wearing a bodysuit or going for a tasteful nude look, I would recommend a thong with very thin straps, along with nipple covers.

  6. Find Coordinating Outfits for your spouse/children

Now that your outfits are selected, it’s time to find something awesome for your family to wear! I would recommend solid, formal outfits for each family member! My go to recommendations for dads would be a sports coat and slacks with dress shoes. If you are opting for a more casual look, I would recommend jeans and a white shirt.

  7. Practice Posing at Home

It sounds silly, but the best way to prepare to be in front of the camera is to practice! Hop in front of a mirror, study your facial features and which angles/expressions are the most flattering for you. As for practicing posing, learn how to keep soft hands and pointed toes. I will tell you exactly what to do with your legs, arms, and hands at your session, but practicing will help you be super comfortable!

  8. Get lots of rest leading up to your session

It can be difficult to get enough rest during pregnancy, but I recommend trying to rest up the day before your session. Your body will be very tired afterwards, and that extra rest can help you push through.

  9. Eat/drink plenty before your session

It’s very important that your body is hydrated and nourished before your session. This will keep your energy up and help keep your blood sugar regulated.

  10. Come ready to go

We will immediately get started upon your arrival. Please come with hair/makeup done and be ready for a great time! I would recommend dressing in something comfortable, without elastic. Clothing with elastic can leave lines on your skin, which can present an issue while editing.

  11. Convey your desires for your session ahead of time

It’s very important to let me know of any special things you would like to do for your session. Some looks require prep on my part. Any special backdrops will need to be selected in advance. Please also let me know what you are comfortable with so I will know the best ways to pose/style you (partial nudity/implied nudity, no extra skin showing, etc..)

  12. Don’t stress

My main goal is to make sure that you have a great time and leave your session feeling beautiful and empowered. Pregnancy is a beautiful time in your life and it's worthy to be celebrated!

Each of these points will be super helpful in preparing for your session! If you have any questions about anything listed above, just reach out! I can’t wait to work with you!
